A nine-question quote is fast. But speed measures the form — not the cover. Here's the question that actually matters when a claim lands.

You call yourself a carpenter. But this month you've also patched plaster, cleared a gutter, hung a few doors and helped a mate frame a deck. That's not unusual — it's most tradies. Very few of us do exactly one thing, exactly one way.

So here's the problem with buying insurance based on how few questions it asks: every question a quote skips is a question it isn't asking about your business. Fast feels good. But the form isn't the cover — and the gap between the two only shows up when something goes wrong.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a quick quote. Most tradies want three things from insurance: a fast process, a fair price, and confidence the cover will actually respond when they need it. The trouble starts when speed becomes the main selling point — because the count of questions tells you nothing about whether the policy fits the work you actually do.

Why the questions exist in the first place

A carpenter doing residential maintenance carries a very different risk to one doing structural work, commercial sites, height work or subcontracting. The same is true across every trade. Those differences are exactly what a thorough quote is trying to understand:

What activities you really perform. Whether you use subcontractors or labour hire. Whether you work at heights. Whether you use heat, welding or grinding. Whether you do excavation or touch underground services. Whether your tools and plant need cover. What limits your contracts demand. What your state requires for your licence. And which exclusions in the wording could quietly affect your work.

None of that is paperwork for its own sake. It's the difference between a policy built around your business and one that looks fine right up until claim time.

The real question isn't

"How quickly can I buy this?" It's: "Will this actually cover the work I do?"

Fewer questions can mean more unknowns

A shorter journey might save a few minutes. But if the process never learns what you do, you can end up with cover that doesn't match your trade. That doesn't make every long quote better, or every simple one bad — plenty of straightforward businesses are well served by a quick online policy. It just means how fast a policy is to buy is a poor way to judge whether it's the right one.

Because insurance is one of those things you only really test when something goes wrong. A client trips over your gear. You damage someone's property. A tool walks off site. A builder asks for a certificate of currency before you can start. A claim turns up months after the job wrapped. That's when the occupation description, the sums insured, the excesses, the endorsements and the exclusions all start to matter — and saving five minutes at quote stage counts for very little if the policy doesn't respond the way you assumed it would.

Online is convenient. It just isn't always simple.

A lot of tradies are more complicated than they first appear. You might call yourself a handyman but also do minor carpentry, plastering, painting and gutter work. A plumber who also does drainage, roofing and the odd commercial job. An electrician who's into data, solar, air-con, EV chargers and security. Those extra lines of work are precisely the details a stripped-back quote can miss — and precisely the ones a claim will care about.

At ProTrades, we're not trying to make the process slow. We're trying to make it right. The goal isn't just to get you insured quickly — it's to get you insured properly, with cover built around the work you genuinely do.

Quick Check

Before you buy any tradie policy online

  • Does the policy correctly list all my trade activities — not just my main one?
  • Are my higher-risk activities included, or quietly excluded?
  • Is my public liability limit enough for the jobs I take on?
  • Are subcontractors and labour hire handled correctly?
  • Are my tools, plant and equipment covered if I need them insured?
  • Are there height, heat, excavation or underground-services exclusions?
  • Does it meet my contract and licence requirements?
  • Do I understand the excesses and the key exclusions?
  • Can I actually speak to someone if I'm unsure?

If you can't answer those, the quote might be quick — but it isn't complete.
