Is Your Current Cover Actually Fit for the Job?

  • Landscaping work disclosed properly — construction, maintenance, mowing, turf, irrigation and retaining walls?
  • Digging or trenching? Excavation and underground services need to be on the table upfront.
  • Any tree work or heights? Often treated separately — never assume it's in.
  • Mowers, machinery and gear valued at accurate replacement values — including what lives on the trailer?
  • Subbies and labour hire declared upfront?
  • A broker who answers the phone when you call?
If you're not confident ticking at least 5, it's worth a review. Time to get it sorted.

What is landscaper insurance?

Landscaper insurance is a package of business insurance policies arranged around the way landscapers, gardeners and lawn mowing contractors actually work — typically public liability, tools & equipment and commercial motor, plus plant & machinery, personal accident, professional indemnity or workers compensation where they fit. Insurers rate landscaping differently depending on the work mix: garden maintenance rates differently to retaining walls and excavation, and tree work or design advice bring their own questions. If the work isn't accurately disclosed, a claim can be reduced or declined — getting the disclosure right up front is most of the battle.

What Does Landscaper Insurance Cover?

A proper package looks at the big risk areas: third-party liability, the gear and machinery that earn you money, your vehicles, your income, and any advice you give. Miss one and you've got a hole in the bucket.

01

Public Liability

Can help protect against eligible third-party injury or property damage claims arising from your work. Limits can be selected around contract and site requirements — commonly $5M, $10M or $20M.

Public Liability Insurance
02

Tools & Equipment

For mowers, brush cutters, blowers, chainsaws and the gear that keeps you earning — subject to policy limits, storage conditions and insurer acceptance.

Tools Insurance
03

Plant & Machinery

Worth considering for mini loaders, trenchers, compactors and other machinery — including options for hired-in plant on bigger construction jobs.

Plant & Machinery
04

Commercial Motor & Trailer

Consider cover for the ute, van, trailer and business vehicles you use to move gear and materials between jobs — with options for business and personal use.

Commercial Motor
05

Personal Accident & Illness

If you are a sole trader, this can help provide financial support if an injury or illness leaves you unable to work, subject to the policy terms.

06

PI & Workers Comp

Professional indemnity may be relevant where you provide paid design or garden planning advice. Workers compensation may be required where you employ people.

What Actually Costs Landscapers Money

The kinds of incidents that generate claims for landscaping businesses. Dollar figures are illustrative examples only — actual claims vary widely.

$30K+
Illustrative example

Digging Into Underground Services

A trench for irrigation or footings finds a cable, pipe or gas line. Repair costs and consequential loss add up fast — and cover often depends on what was disclosed and located before you dug.

$8K+
Illustrative example

Mower Flings a Stone

A ride-on or brush cutter throws a stone through a window, glass door or car panel. Small per-incident cost, but it's the most common liability claim in the game — and it happens more than once.

$20K+
Illustrative example

Gear Stolen From the Trailer

Mowers, blowers, chainsaws and hand tools gone from a trailer or ute overnight. Theft cover usually comes with storage and security conditions worth understanding before you rely on it.

$60K+
Illustrative example

Retaining Wall Failure

A wall moves or fails after handover, damaging fences, paving or the neighbour's property. How a policy responds depends heavily on the cover arranged — a big reason to disclose structural landscaping.

$100K+
Illustrative example

Injury Near Your Work Area

A client trips over equipment or hoses, or a bystander is struck by debris. Liability claims involving injury escalate quickly once lawyers get involved.

$15K+
Illustrative example

Machinery Damage on Site

A mini loader tips, a trencher hits rock, or hired-in plant is damaged in your care. Plant cover conditions — including hired-in machinery — are worth reading before the job, not after.

Public Liability for Landscapers

Public liability is the backbone of the package, and the detail matters as much as the limit. Three things we need to line your cover up properly:

  • The activity — construction, maintenance, mowing, turf, irrigation, paving, retaining walls, excavation and any tree work.
  • The location — residential gardens, commercial grounds, body corporate, council contracts or construction sites under builders.
  • The exposure — digging depth, machinery, chemicals and spraying, subcontractors, labour hire or anything outside standard landscaping.

What's Easy to Miss

"Public liability" doesn't automatically cover everything a landscaping business does. Tree lopping and work at height are often treated separately or excluded. Excavation can carry conditions around locating services before you dig. Herbicide and pesticide spraying can bring its own questions.

We walk you through the fine print before a claim — not after.

Council & Contract Requirements

Councils, builders and commercial contracts commonly require $10M or $20M public liability before you start. Send us the contract or site request and we'll help you work through it.

What We Need to Quote You Properly

The more accurate the picture, the better the outcome — on price, on conditions, and most importantly at claim time.

  • Your main landscaping activities and rough work mix
  • Residential vs commercial and any council contracts
  • Estimated annual turnover and staff numbers
  • Subcontractor and labour-hire payments
  • Details and values of mowers, machinery and trailers
  • Any excavation, tree work, spraying or design services
  • Any contract, site or Certificate of Currency requirements
  • Claims history and current insurer details, where applicable
Typical Landscaper's Package

Most landscaping businesses combine Public Liability Insurance, Tools Insurance, Commercial Motor Insurance and, where machinery is involved, Plant & Machinery Insurance. Design work? See Professional Indemnity for Landscapers. Run a mowing round? See Lawn Mowing & Gardening Insurance.

Landscaper Insurance FAQs

How much public liability cover does a landscaper need?

The right limit depends on your contracts, clients and job sites. Councils, builders and commercial contracts commonly require $10 million or $20 million public liability before work starts, while some residential work may only call for $5 million. Send us the contract or site request and we'll help you work through it.

Does landscaper insurance cover tree work or working at heights?

Not automatically. Tree lopping, tree removal and work at height are often treated separately by insurers and can carry conditions, height limits or exclusions. If tree work is part of your business, it needs to be accurately disclosed when arranging cover.

Can I insure mowers, machinery and gear stolen from a trailer?

Tools and equipment cover may be available for mowers, brush cutters, blowers, chainsaws and trailers. You will need realistic replacement values, and insurers may have conditions around storage, vehicles, trailers or unattended equipment. See our Tools Insurance page for more.

Can I get insurance for my lawn mowing business?

Yes. We arrange packages for lawn mowing and gardening businesses of all sizes, from solo operators to small crews — typically combining public liability, tools cover and personal accident options, with workers compensation where you employ people.

Do I need professional indemnity for garden design advice?

Professional indemnity may be relevant where you provide paid landscape design, garden planning or specification advice, as it can help protect against claims that your advice caused a client financial loss. See Professional Indemnity for Landscapers.

What if I dig near underground services?

Excavation, trenching and irrigation work near underground pipes and cables should be accurately disclosed when arranging cover. Policies can carry conditions around locating services before you dig, and acceptance, exclusions and limits vary by insurer.

How much does landscaper insurance cost in Australia?

Premiums vary based on the landscaping work performed, turnover, staff and subcontractor use, and equipment values. A sole trader landscaper or lawn mowing contractor may see public liability premiums starting from around $500–$1,200 per year, while construction-focused businesses with machinery and staff typically pay more. The only way to get a real number is a quote based on your actual work.

Can you help with a Certificate of Currency for a council or builder?

Yes. Once cover is accepted and in place, we can assist with Certificates of Currency. Let us know early if a council, builder or principal contractor has specific wording or a deadline. Based in Victoria? See our Melbourne landscaper insurance page.
