Plumber Insurance Victoria sorted.
I'm a plumber in Victoria. What insurance do I need?
If you're a licensed plumber in Victoria, you must provide evidence that you hold the relevant insurance before the Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC) will issue or renew your plumbing licence. The required cover is prescribed by Victorian Ministerial Orders and your Certificate of Currency needs the correct information and compliance notation.
ProTrades Insurance specialises in insurance for tradies and plumbing businesses. We help Victorian plumbers arrange cover based on their licence classes, actual plumbing work and business structure — not just a generic public liability policy.
What Insurance Does a Plumber Need in Victoria?
A licensed Victorian plumber must hold the relevant insurance required for their plumbing licence. The BPC states that evidence of insurance must be provided before it will issue or renew a plumbing licence.
Under the Licensed Plumbers General Insurance Order 2002, the prescribed minimum for public liability and completed work liability is $5 million for any one occurrence. The Order also requires other prescribed liabilities to be covered. This is why an ordinary off-the-shelf public liability policy is not automatically suitable for a licensed plumber.
Plumbers licensed for Type B gasfitting need insurance that complies with the relevant Type B Gasfitting Insurance Order. Your licence classes and actual plumbing activities matter.
Victorian Plumber Insurance Requirements in Plain English
The BPC's current plumber insurance guidance points licensed plumbers to two Victorian Ministerial Orders: the Licensed Plumbers General Insurance Order and the Licensed Plumbers (Type B Gasfitting work) Insurance Order.
Hold the Relevant Insurance
Licensed plumbers must hold the insurance prescribed for the relevant plumbing work and licence classes.
Provide a Certificate of Currency
The BPC requires a Certificate of Currency as evidence. An offer of insurance or another policy document is not the same thing.
Use the Plumber's Legal Name
The Certificate of Currency must include the full legal name of the plumber seeking to be licensed. A company name by itself is not enough.
Include the Correct Notation
The BPC publishes the required Ministerial Order compliance notation for the Certificate of Currency, including separate wording for Type B gasfitting.
BPC Certificate of Currency Checklist
Before relying on your insurance for a plumbing licence application or renewal, check the Certificate of Currency against the BPC requirements.
Does Your Certificate Show the Right Details?
- → Full legal name of the plumber seeking to be licensed?
- → Name of the insurer?
- → Policy number and period of insurance?
- → Required Ministerial Order compliance notation?
- → Correct Type B gasfitting notation where relevant?

Insurance for a Plumbing Business in Victoria
The right insurance program depends on how your plumbing business operates. These are common cover types we may discuss with Victorian plumbers.
Plumber Public Liability Insurance
Liability cover is a core part of the prescribed Victorian plumber insurance requirements. Depending on your business and contracts, $5 million, $10 million or $20 million limits may be considered.
Tools Insurance
Cover may be arranged for eligible tools and equipment, including items such as drain cameras, pipe threaders and power tools, subject to the policy terms, limits and theft conditions.
Commercial Motor Insurance
Cover for work utes, vans and other commercial vehicles can be considered separately from the plumber insurance requirements for your licence.
Contract Works Insurance
For businesses involved in construction projects, contract works insurance may help cover insured physical loss or damage to the works during construction, subject to the policy.
Personal Accident Insurance
For eligible insured events, personal accident cover may provide benefits when an injury affects your ability to work, subject to waiting periods, benefit limits and policy conditions.
Professional Indemnity Insurance
Professional indemnity may need consideration where a plumbing business provides reports, inspections, design input, assessments or professional advice.

How Much Does Plumber Insurance Cost in Victoria?
