What is lawn mowing & gardening insurance?

It's a package of business insurance policies arranged around the way mowing and gardening contractors actually work — typically public liability, tools & equipment and commercial motor, plus personal accident and workers compensation where they fit. Insurers rate the work differently depending on the mix: a residential mowing round rates differently to commercial grounds contracts, and spraying, pruning height or ride-on work bring their own questions. If the work isn't accurately disclosed, a claim can be reduced or declined — getting the disclosure right up front is most of the battle.

What Does Mowing & Gardening Insurance Cover?

A proper package looks at the big risk areas: third-party liability, the gear that earns you money, your vehicle and trailer, and your income. Miss one and you've got a hole in the bucket.

01

Public Liability

Can help protect against eligible third-party injury or property damage claims arising from your work — the stone through a window, the trip over a hose. Limits commonly $5M, $10M or $20M.

Public Liability Insurance
02

Tools & Equipment

For mowers, whipper snippers, blowers, hedge trimmers and the gear that keeps the round running — subject to policy limits, storage conditions and insurer acceptance.

Tools Insurance
03

Ride-Ons & Machinery

Worth considering for ride-on mowers and larger machinery used on acreage or commercial grounds — including how and where they're stored and transported.

Plant & Machinery
04

Commercial Motor & Trailer

Consider cover for the ute, van and trailer that carry your business every day — with options for business and personal use.

Commercial Motor
05

Personal Accident & Illness

If you are a sole trader, this can help provide financial support if an injury or illness leaves you unable to work, subject to the policy terms. Mowing is hard on the body.

06

Workers Comp & Extras

Workers compensation may be required where you employ people. Doing landscape construction as well? That's rated differently — see our landscaper page.

What Actually Costs Mowing Contractors Money

The kinds of incidents that generate claims for mowing and gardening businesses. Dollar figures are illustrative examples only — actual claims vary widely.

$8K+
Illustrative example

Mower Flings a Stone

A mower or brush cutter throws a stone through a window, glass door or car panel. It's the most common liability claim in the game — small each time, but it happens more than once in a career.

$15K+
Illustrative example

Trailer Cleaned Out Overnight

Mowers, blowers, trimmers and hand tools gone from the trailer or ute. Theft cover usually comes with storage and security conditions worth understanding before you rely on it.

$12K+
Illustrative example

Spray Drift Damages a Garden

Herbicide drifts onto a neighbour's prized garden beds or a client's lawn is burnt by the wrong mix. Chemical use is treated carefully by insurers — disclosure matters.

$80K+
Illustrative example

Someone Trips Over Your Gear

A client or passer-by trips over a hose, cord or catcher left on a path. Liability claims involving injury escalate quickly once lawyers get involved.

$20K+
Illustrative example

Ride-On Comes to Grief on a Slope

A ride-on slides or tips on a wet embankment, damaging the machine and property around it. Where and how ride-ons are used affects cover and conditions.

$10K+
Illustrative example

Damage to Client Property

A trimmer scars a rendered wall, a mower clips a sprinkler system, a branch drops on a pergola during pruning. Small mistakes on someone else's property add up.

Public Liability for Mowing & Gardening

Public liability is the backbone of the package, and the detail matters as much as the limit. Three things we need to line your cover up properly:

  • The activity — mowing, edging, hedging, pruning, clean-ups, green waste removal and any spraying.
  • The location — residential rounds, strata and body corporate sites, commercial grounds, schools or council contracts.
  • The exposure — ride-ons on slopes, chemicals, pruning height, staff, subcontractors or anything outside standard garden maintenance.

What's Easy to Miss

"Gardening" on a policy doesn't automatically cover everything you do. Spraying and chemical use should be disclosed, pruning often carries height limits, and tree lopping is usually a separate, higher-risk activity. Strata and commercial contracts can also require specific certificate wording.

We walk you through the fine print before a claim — not after.

Strata & Commercial Requirements

Strata managers, body corporates, commercial clients and councils commonly require $10M or $20M public liability and a Certificate of Currency before you start. Send us the requirements and we'll help you work through it.

What We Need to Quote You Properly

The more accurate the picture, the better the outcome — on price, on conditions, and most importantly at claim time.

  • Your work mix — mowing, maintenance, hedging, clean-ups, spraying
  • Residential vs strata, commercial or council contracts
  • Estimated annual turnover and staff numbers
  • Subcontractor payments, where applicable
  • Details and values of mowers, ride-ons, gear and trailers
  • Any pruning height, tree work or chemical use
  • Any contract or Certificate of Currency requirements
  • Claims history and current insurer details, where applicable
Typical Mowing & Gardening Package

Most mowing and gardening businesses combine Public Liability Insurance, Tools Insurance and Commercial Motor Insurance, with personal accident options for sole traders. Doing construction landscaping too? See Landscaper Insurance. Need proof of cover? We can arrange a Certificate of Currency for eligible policies.

Lawn Mowing & Gardening Insurance FAQs

Do I need public liability insurance for a lawn mowing business?

It is not always legally mandatory, but many clients expect it — and strata, body corporate, commercial and council work commonly requires proof of public liability before you start. It can help protect against eligible third-party injury or property damage claims arising from your work.

How much public liability cover does a gardener or mowing contractor need?

The right limit depends on your clients and contracts. Residential rounds may only call for $5 million, while strata, commercial and council contracts commonly require $10 million or $20 million. Send us the contract or site request and we'll help you work through it.

Are my mowers and gear covered if stolen from the trailer?

Tools and equipment cover may be available for mowers, whipper snippers, blowers, hedge trimmers and trailers. You will need realistic replacement values, and insurers may have conditions around storage, vehicles, trailers or unattended equipment. See our Tools Insurance page for more.

Does my insurance cover herbicide or pesticide spraying?

Spraying should be accurately disclosed when arranging cover, as chemical use and spray drift can be treated differently by insurers and may carry conditions or licensing questions. Never assume it is automatically included.

Can I prune hedges and small trees under my policy?

Hedging and pruning are common gardening activities, but insurers often apply height limits, and tree lopping or removal is frequently treated as a separate, higher-risk activity. Tell us exactly what pruning and tree work you do so the cover lines up.

How much does lawn mowing and gardening insurance cost?

Premiums vary based on the work performed, turnover, staff and subcontractor use, and equipment values. A solo mowing or gardening contractor may see public liability premiums starting from around $450–$1,000 per year, with bigger crews and commercial contracts typically paying more. The only way to get a real number is a quote based on your actual work.

What if I employ staff or use subcontractors?

Tell us upfront. Workers compensation may be required where you employ people, and insurers generally need to understand who works for your business and how they are engaged. The treatment of employees, subcontractors and labour hire can vary between policies.

I also do landscaping construction — is that covered?

Landscape construction work such as retaining walls, paving, turf installation and excavation is rated differently to mowing and garden maintenance, so it needs to be disclosed separately. If construction is a real part of your business, see our landscaper insurance page or tell us your full work mix when getting a quote.
